Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)

Committee Purpose: To keep Meeting informed on issues of Quakerly nature that are in upcoming legislation that we can influence through lobbying. Information and action item source FCNL.

Frequency of Meetings: As needed.

Activities: Actively lobbying Senators and Congressmen via phone calls, e-mails, faxes, and visits on issues such as, but not limited to: civil liberties, Iraq, Native Americans, Nuclear Disarmament, Preventing War, the Death Penalty, confirmation of Supreme Court Justices, even the Environment and Global Warming. This lobbying is on a multiple times per week basis, growing reslationships with staffers, and moving towards Senators Warner and Allen and Congressman Wolf.

Current: Supporting October 24 protest against the war, drawing 100,000 from all over the country. FCNL was a key sponsor. Supporting a two day symposium in DC providing native and non-native people an opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue. Lobbied heavily for the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act. Passed the Senate in November:

Interaction: Peace and Social Concerns. FCNL committee works on many issues related to P&SC projects and activities.
